Police are investigating a blue Corvette accused of performing dangerous stunts as questions continue over crowd control and public safety.

STROUDSBURG, Pa. — A late-night gathering that brought dangerous driving, blocked traffic and a large crowd to downtown Stroudsburg has triggered a police investigation, a temporary curfew and a mayoral state of emergency.

The disturbance unfolded late Saturday, August 29, 2026, near the intersection of Main and Seventh streets. Videos shared on social media appear to show vehicles performing burnouts and “donuts” while spectators stood close to the moving cars. Photographs taken the following morning showed circular tire marks covering the intersection.

According to the Stroud Area Regional Police Department, three 911 calls were received between 11:49 and 11:50 p.m. reporting a blue sports car doing donuts in the intersection. Eight additional calls concerned loud music, excessive noise and the large crowd gathered downtown.

Police said the first responding officer arrived at approximately 11:58 p.m., nine minutes after the initial dispatch. At 12:08 a.m., the officer reportedly stopped two vehicles and issued citations. Additional officers arrived around the same time and remained in the area until the crowd dispersed at approximately 3 a.m.

Investigators believe one of the vehicles involved was a blue Chevrolet Corvette Stingray displaying a fictitious New York license plate reading “MAFIA.” Police have released images of the vehicle and are asking anyone who can identify the car or its driver to submit a tip.

The department has described its investigation as ongoing and said it is examining the Corvette as well as any other vehicles connected to the gathering. Police have also requested independent videos that may help investigators determine who participated in the reckless driving.

Social Media Accounts Raise Questions

Residents and witnesses described a chaotic scene involving people walking into traffic, surrounding vehicles and banging on cars. One widely shared Facebook post alleged that a young person was struck or “tagged” by a vehicle before a crowd surrounded it.

That allegation has not been confirmed by authorities. Local officials subsequently said there were no reported injuries or confirmed damage to downtown businesses, according to 28/22 News reporting republished by AOL.

Police have also warned that some information circulating online is inaccurate. Their official account states that officers remained in the area until approximately 3 a.m. and that no additional incidents requiring police intervention occurred after the initial response.

Some news outlets reported that two people were arrested during the disturbance. However, the police department’s written statement identifies two vehicle stops and citations without confirming arrests connected to the alleged driving stunts. Until authorities release additional records, the exact circumstances surrounding those reported arrests remain unclear.

Mayor Declares State of Emergency

Mayor Ellen M. Currie responded Sunday by declaring a state of emergency and temporarily restricting nighttime public gatherings along Main Street.

The restriction applies to Main Street and its adjoining sidewalks between Fifth and Ninth streets, including the intersections at both ends. Public gatherings are prohibited within that area between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. through Friday, September 4, unless the order is modified, withdrawn or extended.

The proclamation does not prevent residents, employees, customers or motorists from lawfully traveling through downtown. Restaurants, bars and other businesses may continue operating, but people are prohibited from congregating in the street, obstructing traffic or remaining in the restricted area as part of a public gathering.

Currie said videos of the incident showed reckless behavior that endangered motorists, pedestrians, police officers and nearby properties. She also expressed concern that widely circulated social-media footage could inspire copycat gatherings.

The mayor is coordinating with Borough Council, the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office and Stroud Area Regional Police to determine whether additional measures are needed. FOX56 reported that the restrictions could be extended into Labor Day weekend if officials believe another disturbance is likely.

StroudFest Approaches

The incident occurred less than a week before StroudFest, one of downtown Stroudsburg’s largest annual community events.

The free festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 5, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. According to the Sherman Theater’s official event page, vendors, food, family activities and live entertainment will occupy Main Street, Seventh Street, Courthouse Square, Monroe Street and Sixth Street.

The current emergency restrictions are scheduled to expire before the festival begins. Nevertheless, the timing places additional pressure on borough officials to prevent another unauthorized gathering while preserving downtown Stroudsburg as a safe destination for residents, visitors and businesses.

Investigation Continues

Street takeovers—whether organized in advance or formed spontaneously—can place spectators only feet away from vehicles accelerating, spinning and losing traction. They can also block emergency vehicles and trap motorists who unexpectedly enter the affected intersection.

Stroud Area Regional Police said the department has “zero tolerance” for such conduct and remains committed to identifying those responsible.

For downtown residents and business owners, the tire marks left across Main and Seventh streets are more than evidence of a reckless night. They are a visible reminder of how quickly an entertainment district can become dangerous when drivers treat public streets like a private stunt course.
